“We have yet to decide if the long march will head towards Islamabad or Rawalpindi”, says Maulana Fazal ur Rehman while threatening to protest against Pakistani Army. Maulana is the leader of Pakistan Democratic Movement, an alliance of major political parties seeking ouster of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s government. “We hold the establishment responsible and will now direct our criticism towards them,” he adds.
The opposition has been long demanding resignation of Prime Minister Imran Khan. Although, they were calling his government selected right after the elections in 2018. However, the serious economic challenges resulted in poor economic performance of PTI government. This is resulting in an increasing momentum against the government.

Announcing Resignations from Parliament
PDM is announcing resignations from Pakistani parliament. Moreover, its leader Fazal ur Rehman says the PDM will protest outside the ECP office on January 19. When asked about resignations, Rehman says there is still a month left till the deadline, “we will play our cards carefully.” He added that the PDM parties will take part in the by-polls but have yet to decide about the Senate elections.
On the other hand, the government claims that PDM’s plan to siege public institutions show immaturity. The government doesn’t seem upset with the movement until now. Although, there are several arrests of opposition leaders recently from the accountability masters in Pakistan.
Whatever goes, this is the first time that a political alliance is announcing long march against country’s powerful Army. Pakistan Army has been directly ruling the country for more than 40 years in country’s 70 years of existence.
